67th MAAA Model Aircraft Championships – Pylon Racing Report

Pylon racing classes for FA1, F400 and Q500 were included in the 67th MAAA Model Aircraft Championships that were held in Albury, New South Wales on 28 to 30 December 2013.  The Nationals was hosted by the VMAA and the pylon event, which organised by the VMPRA, was held at the Twin Cities Model Aero Club’s field.  The club provided some of the workers necessary to run the event, with the competitors filling in where possible.  One day of practice and two days of racing were planned, with the objective of running 9 rounds in each class.

The flying field had undergone some significant changes since the last time the pylon fraternity had visited.  Most notably, there was an impressive concrete runway, which replaced the previous runway that was made from conveyor belt matting.  However, a new feature was a permanent pilot station and a large sunshade structure that was located immediately adjacent to the runway.  The proximity the sunshade as well as the fencing and a power line that was located on the landing approach at one end of the field meant that the pilots would have a challenge landing their models after each race.

Contestants from Victoria and New South Wales began arriving on Saturday 28th December to complete registration and get in some practice and tuning for the conditions.  The temperature was in the mid to high 30’s and there was a Total Fire Ban in place across the border in Victoria.  Most chose to put in a few flights before heading back to the swimming pool at their motel for refreshments.

On Sunday morning 29 December, the course was set up to allow for the cross-wind conditions.  Racing was conducted over 10 ½ laps, with the timers being located at the No1 pylon.  Temperatures were slightly lower than the previous day, but conditions were still very hot being in the low 30’s.

Racing got underway mid-morning with 5 rounds of F400 being flown.  There were 10 entries and Ranjit Phelan set the pace with a fastest time of 64.85 seconds.  Andrew Davies lost a model when it came in contact with a pylon and others tried to sieve their models through the fences and sunshade structure during landing.

Next up was Q500, which attracted eight entries.  Daniel Arapakis set the early pace with an impressive time of 94.96 that was backed up with a couple more times in the 95 second range.  Jim Orenshaw also posted some impressive 95 second times.

FA1 got underway mid-afternoon and there were 10 entries.  However, this was the hottest part of the day and the walk to and from the flight line in the heat was beginning to take its toll on the pilots.  As a result, only three rounds were flown before it was agreed to call it a day.  The heat also meant that the race times were not as fast as are seen at other locations.

Before racing could get underway on Monday 30 December the course had to be changed, as the wind was coming from the opposite direction…but still a cross-wind.  This took some time as the course had to be laid out to avoid obstacles and to stay clear of the control line area that was being used for other Nationals events.

Racing recommenced by mid-morning with four more rounds of FA1 being flown.  The heat as well as the rate of attrition increased with both Andrew Davies and Gary Davidson losing models.  In the end, Ranjit Phelan flying a model of his own design and manufacture was in first place with a score of 403.4.  He was followed by Tom Wetherill with a VooDoo who posted a score of 405.9.  Rick Townsend was third with a score of 408.6.  Ranjit also posted the best time with a 62.84.

Next up was Q500 and four more rounds were flown to complete the class.  David Axon and Barry Townsend had a spectacular mid-air at pylon 1, obliterating both models.  Daniel Arapakis cruised home to first place with a score of 687.2.  His time of 94.96 was the fast time for the event.  Jim Orenshaw was second with a score of 750.6 and James Hurley was third with a score of 802.5.

F400 was up last, with four rounds being flown in the afternoon heat.  By this time the pilots and workers were all getting tired and dehydrated so it took some time to get all the rounds completed.  The final result was that Ranjit Phelan was in first place with a score of 480.7 with his Nelson powered Polecat.  Daniel Arapakis was second with a score of 488.0 with his Nelson powered Terry O’Connor model.  Tom Wetherill was third with a score of 512.5 with his Nelson powered Loki.  Ranjit’s time of 64.85 seconds from the prior day held as the fast time for the class.

It was a sun burned and somewhat weary group that packed up after the event and stayed on for the prize giving ceremony.  Trophies were given to the top three finishers in each class.  Special thanks were given to Glenn and Nerida Matthews for running the event, Toni and David Axon for working as starters, the people who worked the course and the host club for providing their facilities.

Munro Nov, 2013 – Event Report

Beau Murphy on home turf

The last VMPRA event for this calendar year was held at Munro (near Bairnsdale) at Barry Murphy’s superb, purpose built, pylon racing field. We usually get a good turn-out for events at this venue but as usual only the weather can put a dampener on it. Well, this was literally the problem. Showers on Saturday & Sunday stopping racing briefly until rain settled in on the Sunday afternoon bring the event to another early ending. It has been a bit of an ongoing theme this year.

Despite this there was some good racing to be had. Saturday morning was started with 4 rounds of F400 followed by 4 rounds of Q500 and then 4 rounds of FA1. Sunday started with 3 more rounds of FA1 and then we only managed 1 round of Q500 before the rain settled in.

It was great to see James York from South Australia and Ranjit Phelan from NSW at Munro. Although Ranjit does this fairly regularly, it’s great that these guys travelled such long distances to go pylon racing. Such is the passion we have for this facet of the hobby.

Results

F400

With little over a second between Andrew Davies & Tom Wetherill, it was a close result from 1st to 2nd places.

Places:
1st Andrew Davies
2nd Tom Wetherill
3rd Glenn Matthews

Fastest Time: 66.91 – Tom Wetherill
No. of competitors – 8
Course – 10.5 Lap

Q500

Daniel was back in fine form with a convincing win in Q500. It was unfortunate that Matt Young broke his plane on the 1st race of the week end and spent the good part of the Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning rebuilding his plane only to have the rounds cut short by the weather so he didn’t fly again for the event. It was good to see Matt back racing and now he’s got a license and a car, we hope to see him more often. James York, also had a plane wrecked in the 1st round but luckily flew his backup plane for the rest of the week end.

Places:
1st Daniel Arapakis
2nd Mike Kellet
3rd Tom Wetherill

Fastest Time: 92.67 – Daniel Arapakis
No. of competitors – 10
Course – 10.5 Lap

FA1

Daniel Arapakis and his very proud father, Andrew

It was good to see Ranjit back down in VIC and he was in fine form taking first place. The story of the week end for our premier class was Daniel Arapakis’s first ever race in FA1. He didn’t just get up there and fly around way off the course. He was attaching right from the start, not only giving Gary Davidson and Jim Orenshaw a good run for their money but beat them with a time of 67.47. Unfortunately this enthusiastic approach to his racing saw a mid-air between him and Gary later in the event. There was also a mid-air between Vern Gibson and Tom Wetherill.

Places:
1st Ranjit Phelan
2nd Barry Murphy
3rd Andrew Davies

Fastest Time: 58.93 – Ranjit Phelan
No. of competitors – 11
Course – 10.5 Lap

2013-2014 Season Championship

FA1

Barry Murphy increased his lead from 9 to 13 points with Brian Steele and Glenn Matthews remaining in 2nd & 3rd place respectively.

F400

Gary Davidson remained in 3rd place while Andrew Davies moved ahead of Glenn Matthews into 1st position.

Q500

There was no change in positions with myself (John Schmidli) in 1st, Daniel Arapakis in 2nd and Jim Orenshaw in 3rd place, but Daniel has eaten substantially into my lead.

Next Event

There is no other VMPRA events for the rest of the year with the first one being at Camperdown on 1st and 2nd of February (2014).

In the meantime, there is the MAAA Nationals on at Albury/ Wodonga on December 28-30, 2013. Don’t forget to fill in an entry form if you going to fly at the Nats.

Check out the Event Calender for these events and all the new event entries for next year. Make sure you put them in your diary so you don’t miss any of the action.

I won’t be at the Nats so if anybody would like to do a report and/or photos for the Nationals, I’ll put then on this site. So wishing you all a great Christmas and here’s to some more fun racing next year.

Hamilton 2013 – VMPRA State Championship – Event Report

Event

On the week end of October 12-13 (2013) the VMPRA held the Victorian State Pylon Championships which was held in Hamilton. Ironically, this is the event that we see a good number of our South Australian friend come across to enjoy a great weekend of pylon racing. On the Friday afternoon when I arrived, there were more of the  SA guys at the field than Victorians. All up, there was 7 SA pilots plus a few partners along for the trip and calling.

There was quite a few of us camping over the weekend despite some dire weather predictions. It turned out to be a very pleasant spot to camp. The field at Hamilton was very green with plenty of grass and solid ground. No need for me to get towed out of the mud this time.

We had a great deal of help from the Hamilton members They manning #1 pylon and also number 2 & 3 pylons where manned all weekend. Along with the catering, the VMPRA were very grateful to the Hamilton members.

All weekend we had fairly windy condition with a threat of worsening conditions on the Sunday, so we managed to get 5 round of each class raced just in case Sunday racing was cut short. Yep… It was! F400 completed their 4 rounds on Sunday but Q500 was cut short and FA1 didn’t get to fly at all. It’s been a on-going theme since the new racing season started on July.

FA1

This class being the Formula One of pylon racing and travelling at similar speeds, people who see this class for the first time can not believe what they are seeing.

Leigh Hocken was on form for this weekend after an early hickup in the form of a spectacular wing failure while practicing on Saturday morning. Gary Davidson also lost his model. He now knows where pylon #3 is as he hit it during a race.

We had a couple of pilots from SA flying in the class (Stuart Humpherson & Tom Jacobsen).

Places:
1st Leigh Hocken
2nd Barry Murphy
3rd Brian Steele

Fastest Time: 61.98 – Leigh Hocken
No. of competitors – 10
Course – 10.5 Lap

F400

A good size field for this class with 13 compeditor of which 6 were from SA.

Mike Kellet lost his KD Racer (jnr) after he lost it around #1.

Places:
1st Glenn Matthews
2nd Andrew Davies
3rd Terry O;Connor

Fastest Time: 67.89 – Andrew Davies
No. of competitors – 13
Course – 10.5 Lap

Q500

Not my best weekend for this class as I went home with 2 broken models but all caused during dodgy landings. I think the was one less Viper after John Yianni crashed his. The Tee-Que 500 is now becoming the more prevalent Q500 model now. Daniel was flying his new Tee-Que on the weekend.

Places:
1st Tom Weatherill
2nd John Schmidli
3rd Daniel Arakakis

Fastest Time: 99:33 – Daniel Arapakis
No. of competitors – 9
Course – 10.5 Lap

Next Event

The next event is on November 23-24th and is back at Bazza’s Paddock near Munro. This purpose-build pylon racing field is fantastic and we always enjoys racing there. I hope to see lots of competitors at this event. If you need to find out the location, as it’s a private field, you can contact a member of the committee and we can give you directions. This is a great place to go pylon racing for the first time, so grab a Quickie model come along.

Another great chance to try pylon racing for yourself, is a club event at the LDMFA on November 10. Although not an official VMPRA event, this is open to anybody as long as you are a VMAA member. It will be a Q500, Sports & Electric pylon race (10.5 laps only). Visit the LDMFA site to find out more.

The championship table has been updated and there is also a photo gallery from this event.

Swan Hill 2013 – Event Report

Event

A panoramic view of the Swan Hill club

It’s the first time that we have raced at Swan Hill in a very long time. We were back to our pre-World Championship numbers with a large number of us camping out at the airfield. There were 7 caravans or camper trailers this time. The club members made us feel very welcome and provided us with food for breakfasts, lunches and Saturday night’s dinner.

The weather was good with the rain stopping mid Friday afternoon and the rest of the time was mostly sunny with light to moderate winds.

Barry Murphy starting his Minute Master with call Andrew Arapakis

The racing for both days started with F400, followed by Q500 and FA1 to finish the day. Time allowed FA1 to complete 6 rounds on the Saturday so only needing 3 more rounds to be completed on Sunday. All classes completed 9 rounds over the weekend.

Thanks to the Swan Hill Club for manning the no.1 pylon timing cage, the VMPRA members who looked after the no. 2 & 3 pylons and as usual, Toni Axon for acting as starter and Nerida Matthews for the tireless job of time keeper/result recorder and keeping us moving along.

New Calendar Entries

It’s worth having a look at the events calander again as there have been some additions.

For this year, there have been 2 non-Championship events added.

  • A sports/Q500 event being put on in November by the LDMFA club. A great chance for those wanting to get into pylon racing, to give it a try.
  • At the end of the year, there is the 67th MAAA Nationals being held in Albury/Wodonga. We have decided to get right behind the Nationals by participating and also encourage others from surrounding states to come along.

2014 Calender

We are starting to get events confirmed for next year, so keep checking back and add them to your diaries. Two events now listed are:

  • Camperdown – the first event for the year.
  • A F3D WC 2015 team select event in October being held at Cohuna.

Next Event

The first time Vern has beaten Brian!

The next event on the Calendar is the State Championship being held at Hamilton on October 12-13. I believe there will be a number of our South Australian friends coming to this event which will be great. I look forward to seeing everybody there.

The championship table has been updated and there is also a photo gallery from this event.

Cohuna August 2013 – Event report

On the 17th & 18th of August we ventured up to Cohuna, a town up near the Victorian and New South Wales border between Kerang and Echuka, for a weekend of pylon racing (classes – FA1, F400 and Q500). This was the first event since the F3D World Championships in Holland that some members of the VMPRA were involved in.

The last event at Bendigo was severely affected by rain and only the F400 class managed to race 4 rounds. This weekend was looking also to be badly effected, not by rain but by very strong winds. Those who traveled up to Cohuna on Friday to do some test flights encountered extremely strong winds. Not much testing was done that afternoon.

In the morning, after even stronger winds during the night, the wind died down and was a lot calmer. Due to the uncertainty of the weather and the fact that there was a forecast for more strong winds on Sunday, we needed to get a good amount of rounds in on the Saturday. We started with FA1 and Q500 together as these classes missed out at the Bendigo event all together.

We flew 5 rounds of FA1 and Q500 during the morning and after lunch, we flew 5 rounds of F400 leaving only a planned 4 rounds of each class for Sunday, weather permitting.

That night, after dinner, the VMPRA AGM was held at a room at the Cohuna Hotel. Members will receive minute of the meeting in the coming weeks.

Sunday morning wasn’t too bad to start with but the winds gradually increased in strength throughout the morning. After 2 rounds of FA1 and Q500, a meeting was held and we agreed to abandon any further racing. We packed up, had lunch, presented trophies and then headed off home early.

Cohuna is a great place for pylon racing and the club provides us with a great deal of support. It was especially good to have enough helpers from the club to man all the pylons including judges for pylon 2 and 3.

FA1

Paces:
1st Barry Murphy
2nd Brian Steel
3rd James Hurley

F400

Places:
1st Andrew Davies
2nd Gary Davidson
3rd Daniel Arapakis

Q500

Places:
1st John Schmidli
2nd Jim Oreshaw
3rd Daniel Arapakis

This event was mostly incident free except for Daniel managing to hit Pylon 2 with his Q500 leaving a trail of polystyrene and balsa strewn across the field. He possibly was followed in his mentors footsteps too closely as Beau Murphy did the same at Munro a short time before the World Championship.

You can view the full result here.

F3D World Championships

In the wrap-up of the World Champs, there has been a lot of information, photos, video etc. added to the official website at www.wcf3d2013.nl/

Congratulations to Chris Callow for taking out the championship once again and to all the Australian & New Zealand team members who took part.

VMPRA Season Championship

Tom receiving the FA1 & F400 2012-2013 season championship trophies.

It’s well and truely off and running after a bit of a fause start due to the Bendigo wash-out. You can compete just by attending as many events as possible and working at building the best set result possible. The championship really rewards consistency.

At this event, the previous championship winners were presented with their awards (Tom Wetherill – FA1 and F400 and John Schmidli – Q500).

Check out the table so far.

Next Event

We are off to Swan Hill on September 14-15. VMPRA hasn’t been to Swan Hill in a long time and it’s always great to get a new location to go racing.

In the last couple of years the Swan Hill club has experienced a real resurgence and they are very keen to have us. There is a group of Swan Hill members that will probably camp at the site and they can also provide up to 8 helpers so this event will be well supported.

They have free on-site camping, a hot shower and toilets and there is likely to be big brekky and lunch at very reasonable prices.

The strip is 50 metres from the pits and the runway is gypsum (no dust) and the club can mow a take-off square and roll it if necessary.

So let’s make this a successful weekend and it would be great to see numbers back up to pre-World Champs numbers.

The championship table has been updated and there is also a photo gallery from this event and you check out the calender for future races.

AMPRA, Munro June 8-10, 2013 – Event Report

What a weekend this was! I would have to say, “too much pylon racing is barely enough” but it came pretty close.

Vern's rather cold F400 model (Vern's iPhone photo)

It’s seldom we get to go pylon racing for 3 days in a row, but even more rare that we would have good weather to do this. This weekend, we encountered absolutely spectacular weather for all 3 days. Icy mornings to start with, clear blue skies and extremely still conditions prevailed.

Strictly speaking this isn’t a VMPRA event. It’s the annual AMPRA (Australian Miniature Pylon Racing Association) Championship and this was hosted by Barry Murphy at his spectacular, purpose-built pylon racing field, affectionately known as Bazza’s Paddock.

We had a good turnout of Victorian competitors and 1 interstater (Ranjit Phelan) with a large contingency camping out at the field which is becoming a popular thing to do at a lot of the country locations. It was a shame that not more interstate competitors could make it to the event.

The catering at this event was fantastic with a huge variety of food throughout the day including a pre test flight breakfast.

FA1 (AUST F3D), F400 & Q500 classes raced this weekend.

Saturday we raced 4 rounds of F400, 4 Rounds of Q500 and 2 rounds of FA1.
Sunday, 3 rounds of Q500 and the remaining 7 rounds of FA1.
Monday, 2 rounds of Q500 and the remaining 5 rounds of F400.

FA1

Places:
1st Beau Murphy
2nd Gary Davidson
3rd Vern Gibson

(R to L) - Vern Gibson, Marcus Guss, Barry Murphy, Beau Murphy, Glenn Matthews & Gary Davidson,

The fastest time was Ranjit Phelan with 56.51s. Terry O’Connor’s plane went in, going around pylon 3 and Beau Murphy hit a pylon.

F400

Places:
1st Glenn Matthews
2nd Tom Wetherill
3rd Andrew Davies

(L to R) - Brian Steele, Andrew Davies, Jim Orenshaw, Tom Wetherill, Glenn Matthews & Garry Davidson

James Hurley raced his new KD Racer and Daniel Arapakis flew F400 for the first time with his Terry O’Connor built aircraft. His best time and 2nd race ever in this class was 72.36s.
Fastest time was flown by Andrew Davies with 68.74s.

Q500

Places:
1st Daniel Arapakis
2nd Ian Haigh
3rd John Schmidli

(L to R) - Jim Orenshaw, John Schmidli, Daniel Arapakis, Beau Murphy, Ian Haigh & Kim O'Conor

There were 10 entries – the largest number I’ve seen at a 3-class event in the last 4 years. Really great to see more interest in this class and this has really raised the game with closer levels of competition.
The fastest time was Ian Haigh with  95.19s. This was achieved with his spare aircraft after the mysterious mid-air disintegration of his Viper.

World Championships

By the time our next event comes around, competitors will be there or on their way to the F3D World Championships in the Netherlands. We’d like to wish the Australian and New Zealand teams all the best. Those representing Australia are:

Beau and Barry Murphy
Ranjit Phelan and Rick Townsand
Tyler and Warren Mees
and our junior, Matt Young and caller Bruce DeChastel

Also other VMPRA members:

Tom Wetherill and Jim Orenshaw who are representing New Zealand.

Next Event

The next event is at Bendigo on July 13-14 and we are racing the FA1, F400 and Q500.

We are currently trying to confirm whether camping is allowed at the field, but there is a caravan park 5 minutes away in Marong where we usually have the AGM. We are also expecting to run the VMPRA AGM and general meeting (venue and time TBC).

New Event – Swan Hill

We have an event coming up on September 14-15 in Swan Hill. VMPRA haven’t been to Swan Hill in a long time and it’s always great to get a new location to go racing, so put this one in your diaries and let’s support this one.

In the last couple of years the Swan Hill club has experienced a real resurgence and they are very keen to have us. There is a group of Swan Hill members that will probably camp at the site and they can also provide up to 8 helpers. The strip is 50 metres from the pits and the runway is gypsum (no dust) and the club can mow a take-off square and roll it if necessary.

So let’s try and make this a successful weekend. It would be great to see the guys from SA and the other Eastern states there.

Event Report – Werribee, May 19, 2013

Q500s ready for take-off

What great weather and fantastic turnout we had for our annual Q500, Sports  EF-1 event held at the Werribee Club last Sunday. This event is close to Melbourne and is always a good opportunity for newcomers to pylon, to have a go without travelling too far. At this very event, 12 months ago, a young lad named Daniel Arapakis came along with his trainer and flew pylon for the first time. Fast forward 12 months and he’s winning events flying his Vipers and on this day, test flew his first F400 model.

Six rounds of each class on a 10.5 lap FAI long course was flown so times can be compared to previous events.

Q500

Jim scores 1st place

With 11 competitors, I think this is the most we’ve had in the last 4 years that I’ve been back flying. There was only 4.2 seconds between the place getters’ and only 1 plane came to grief (think Matt and shipping container!). Jim Orenshaw racing his brand new airframe (his own design) and engine combination came first with Daniel Arapakis only 1 second behind.

1st – Jim Orenshaw
2nd – Daniel Arapakis
3rd – John Schmidli

Sports

In this class, pretty much anything goes. We had Tom Wetherill flying his super slick 32 size pylon racer, Mike Kellet racing a Cessna-looking trainer, Ian Haigh with his 16+ year old stick model, first timer Grant Collins flying a sports low wing and Andrew Arapakis, (also a first timer) flying a classic trainer.

All had a good day’s racing except Andrew who’s engine seized in the first race of the day. Was this one of Daniel’s old engines? Hope to see you flying at the next race Andrew.

1st – Tom Wetherill
2nd – Mick Kellet
3rd – Ian Haigh

The walk back, Mark with his EF1

EF-1

This class is slowly gathering momentum with three entries at this event.

Mark French flew his Shoestring, Walter Muller and myself, Pogo’s. All three models used the same E-Flite outrunner motors with different combinations of ESC’s and LiPo’s.

Finally some good weather in Melbourne and six rounds were flown. Mark was experiencing ESC problems (possibly due to overheating) which caused a reduction of power towards the end of each race and Walter flew very consistently to improve his times throughout the day.

Many thanks to the Werribee Club for hosting this Pylon event, providing catering and pylon marshals.

Allan Swift

1st – Allan Swift
2nd – Walter Muller
3rd – Mark French

Championship

Daniel and his new F400

With only the AMPRA/Munro event left to run for the 2012 – 2013 Championship, this is the situation as it stands;

FA1 – Tom Wetherill has wrapped up 1st place. With Glenn Matthews more than 10 points behind, Tom can’t loose. Congratulations Tom!

Glenn Matthews and Barry and Beau Murphy will be fighting it out for 2nd and 3rd place.

F400 – It’s really tight at the top with Tom Wetherill, Jim Orenshaw and Andrew Davies battling out for the places. Gary Davidson and Glenn Matthews also have a chance of getting into the placings.

Q500 – No change in the top 3 positions but James Hurley has dropped away from the top by 4 points.

Next year’s championship starts with the July 13-14 event in Bendigo, so it’s now time to prepare and plan your assault on this title!

Next Event

AMPRA – This is a national pylon event and it’s being held here in Victoria, so there will be a lot of flyers from interstate. This is the big event for the year. Check out this AMPRA page for details.

Event Report – Warrnambool 13-14, 2013

Much thought on the walk to & from the start line

The third VMPRA event for 2013 was held at the Warrnambool Model Aircraft Club’s field in Koroit, Victoria.  The field was in excellent condition and had been well groomed by the host club. Contestants began arriving on Friday afternoon and a large contingent set up camp at the field.  Those that arrived early enjoyed excellent weather conditions for testing and practice.

Three classes were scheduled to be flown – Q500 Sport, VIC F400 and FA1, the Australian version of FAI.  Per usual VMPRA practice, the racing was held over 10 ½ laps of the FAI course.  This reduces the requirements for the number of course workers as the cut judges at the No1 Pylon also serve as the timers.

Q500 Sport and VIC F400 were scheduled for Saturday morning.  Q500 attracted six entries and VIC F400 attracted 5 entries.  Beau Murphy also flew an F5D.  Three rounds of these classes were completed before the weather conditions deteriorated and racing was called off for the day.

At the end of three rounds, James Hurley was setting the pace in Q500 Sport.  David Axon had entered the fray and was running in second place – under the guidance of Bryan Steele, with maintenance support from Jim Orenshaw.  James’ arch rivals – John Schmidli and Daniel Arapakis suffered 200s.  Matt Carter obliterated his model when it came in contact with the ground.

In VIC F400, Glenn Matthews lead the way with his new Nelson LS powered Supercat.  He was followed by Andrew Davies and Gary Davidson.  These proved to be the final placings for this class as there was not sufficient time to complete any additional rounds on Sunday.

Sunday dawned with misty rain and low cloud cover, which delayed the start.  However, once the weather improved racing got underway with eight additional rounds of Q500 Sport and eight rounds of FA1 being completed.

Maybe one of the next generation of Q500 flyers - Helping dad!

The racing action in Q500 Sport became more intense on Sunday and times dropped significantly as conditions were much better than the day before.  At the end of 11 rounds of racing Daniel Arapakis was comfortably in first place.  His best time was 90.85 seconds, which is very impressive for this class.  John Schmidli was in second place and Davis Axon was in third place – having improved his race times by over 20 seconds!

The initial pace in FA1 was fairly conservative, as re-tuning seemed to be in order for some contestants due to the significant change in the weather conditions.  However, by Round Four the pace was picking up and the weather conditions had stabilised.  Eight rounds were run before time and daylight were starting to run out.  When the scores were tallied Tom Wetherill was in first place.  Andrew Davies finished second – a good return to form with a fresh engine.  Glenn Matthews finished in third place, posting some good times along the way.  The fastest time in FA1 was a 58.5 (for 10 ½ laps) that was posted by Beau Murphy.  The scores for the other competitors in FA1 were hampered by a few too many 200’s.

Team Murphy on the way to the start line

The Warrnambool event proved to be a great competition and VMPRA extends it thanks to the host club for allowing use of the field, providing workers to help man the course and for keeping everyone well fed during the weekend.

Results

FA1

This weekend was not so good for team Murphy with both Barry & Beau having issues. Very uncharacteristic for them.

1st – Tom Wetherill
2nd – Andrew Davies
3rd  – Glenn Matthews

F400

There was smaller numbers than usual particularly with James Hurley & myself not having a model to fly in this event. Tom Wetherill had an mishap when landing his Loki and broke the fuselage.

1st – Glenn Matthews
2nd – Andrew Davies
3rd – Gary Davidson

Q500

And Matt sat there working all afternoon until he had a plane to fly for the next day!

Another good turn-out for Q500 with David Axon joining in the fun. With the exception of a mishap with one of his models throwing a prop blade and being uncontrollable and going in, he had another model which flew well and he really improved his flying with the help of Brian Steel (shouting at him – David’s word) who was calling for him. David kept achieving new personal bests and ended up with 3rd place.

There was some good scrapps between myself and Daniel Arapakis with both of us getting new personal bests. 90.85 & 92.98 respectively. At this rate Daniel will be sub 90 seconds before long!

1st – Daniel Arapakis
2nd – John Schmidli
3rd – David Axon

Championship

FA1 – Tom Wetherill still leads but Glenn Matthews move up to second place and Beau Murphy move done to 3rd.

F400 – No change in the top 3 positions, but the points are close between Tom Wetherill, Jim Orenshaw & Andrew Davies so anything could happen at the next event.

Q500 – No change in the top 3 positions but James Hurley has drop away from the top by 4 points.

There is 1 more event for FA1 & F400 & 2 more for Q500.

The next year’s championship starts at the July 13-14 event at Bendigo so it’s now time to prepare and plan your assault on this title for your favoured class/es.

Next Event

The next event is a 1 day comp at Werribee flying Q500, EF-1 & Sports. The 1 day, introductory class races are the perfect event for coming along and trying pylon racing. There will be plenty of people on hand to assist you. You don’t need to have a special model. A 46 size trainer or low wing aircraft would be a fine model to start flying pylon.

EF-1 (Electric Formula 1) is a popular electric pylon racing class overseas. The planes are ARF models of full size formula 1 pylon racers. If you are into the electric models and want to race, this is your chance.

Bought a new Viper and ready to try racing it, come along to Werribee!

AMPRA

Also coming up is this year’s AMPRA event. This is a national pylon event and it’s being held here in Victoria, so there will be a lot of flyers from interstate. This is the big event for the year. Check the calendar for details.

Event Report – Munro, March 2013

Back on the weekend of March 23-24, the VMPRA held an event down at Bazza’s Paddock. For those who are unfamiliar with this venue, the field is near Munro between Bairnesdale and Stratford in Gippsland (Victoria, Australia). This field is a private, purpose-built pylon racing course developed by Barry Murphy. It is always a brilliant place to hold an event.

After the recent hot weather, it was nice to have milder conditions. Each day started off still, but the wind picked up during the mornings. Unfortunately on the Sunday, it was decided that FA1 wouldn’t fly as the wind had become too strong to continue racing. As a result, only 5 rounds of FA1 were flown for the weekend.

There was a lot more carnage than at recent events, with planes lost by Rick Townsend, Andrew Davies, Matt Young and James Hurley. James and Matt found themselves out of planes by lunch time on Saturday. Bad luck for both of them but especially for Matt, who had traveled down by train from Bendigo with his planes, gear and camping equipment which was a really big effort! It was also good to have him flying Q500 as well as FA1.

Beau & Barry Murphy with their "Hall of Fame" awards

During our lunch break on the Saturday, we had a visit from some VMAA & MAAA committee members. They presented the VMAA ‘Hall of Fame’ to Beau and Barry Murphy for their 2nd place at the F3D world championships back in 2011. It was great that the presentation could be made during this event and congratulations to Beau and Barry. Well done and we’ll be looking forward to hearing how you go at the world champs in Holland later this year.

FA1

1st Place Barry Murphy
2nd Place Tom Wetherill
3rd Place Glenn Matthews

F400

1st Place Tom Wetherill
2nd Place Gary Davidson
3rd Place Glenn Matthews

Q500

1st Place John Schmidli
2nd Place Daniel Arapakis
3rd Place Ian Rickard

Championship

The championship is now getting close to the end with only 2 FA1,  F400 and 3 Q500 events left for this season.

For FA1 there was no change with the top 3 still being Tom Wetherill, Beau Murphy & Glenn Matthews respectively. Tom has increase his lead considerably as Beau had an uncharacteristically bad run on Saturday.

F400 saw a swapping of positions between flying partners Tom Wetherill and Jim Orenshaw. Tom has leaped to the top and Jim has moved down to 2nd place. Andrew Davies has now moved up to 3rd place.

There is a tight battle at the top with myself (John Schmidli) moving back to 1st place with James Hurley in 2nd Place although both on equal points. Positions have been decided based on total times. Daniel Arapakis maintains his 3rd position.

The championship table has been updated and there is also a photo gallery from this event.

Next Event

Our next event is at Warrnambool on April 13-14

Event Report – Bacchus Marsh 2013

Bacchus Marsh – Q500, EF1 & Sports Pylon Race.

March 10, 2013

On yet another very warm day, we headed off to the Bacchus Marsh model aircraft club to race the introductory classes of Q500, EF-1 & Sports. The intention of this event is to give people a chance to try pylon racing for a first time or to encourage those new to pylon racing to improve their skills.

James Hurley and I where first to arrive at the club and were given a friendly welcome by  a group of local club members already there with BBQs setup and chewing the fat.

Due to an over-site when the event calendar was put together, this event was scheduled for the Sunday of the Labour Day long weekend (in Victoria). As a result there were pretty low numbers and no new comers to give pylon a go. There was still a group of 8 flyers there plus David & Toni Axon along with some Bacchus Marsh members, there to help run the event.  We decided to go ahead and get 5 rounds complete, have lunch, presentations and pack up early to escape the hottest part of the day. Funnily enough, I was last to leave and it had started raining as I drove out of the club. Who expected that!

Out of the 8 flyers, 5 of us flew Q500 models and this would contributed to the season championship. The other 3 were a variety of models. Alan Swift with a (legal) EF-1 model, Terry O’Connor had an electric converted Quarter Midget model (very similar dimensions to the EF-1) and Tom Wetherill flew a composite/pylon style IC model.

I think we all had a good time. I certainly know I did and any chance to fly around the course is another chance to improve your flying.

Results: Q500

1st Place – John Schmidli
2nd Place – James Hurley only 0.6 sec behind the lead.
3rd Place – Gary Davidson. Only 4.0 sec of the pace.

Note that the course was not measured out so times are not indicative of our usual results.

 Next Event:

Bazza’s paddock at Munro on March 23-24.
All 3 classes (FA1, F400 & Q500)

The championship table has been updated and there is also a photo gallery from this event.

I didn’t manage to get many photo on the day due to there being only 3 heats per round. Anybody interested in contributing to this website, It would be great if you would like to:
1. Take photos of the event,
2. Write an event report.

Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if you would like to help out in any way.
