We’ve just finished the 2012-2013 VMPRA Seasons Championship and the new 2013-2014 Championship starts at the next event which is Bendigo on July 13-14. The slate is scrubbed clean now, so it’s your chance to have a go at seeing how high up the ladder you can get over the next 12 month.
It has been a lot of fun and a challenge having the championship running over the year which makes doing well at a single event, not just an isolated result. The secret is consistency or constant improvement of performance and regular attendance of events.

What a weekend this was! I would have to say, “too much pylon racing is barely enough” but it came pretty close.

It’s seldom we get to go pylon racing for 3 days in a row, but even more rare that we would have good weather to do this. This weekend, we encountered absolutely spectacular weather for all 3 days. Icy mornings to start with, clear blue skies and extremely still conditions prevailed.
Strictly speaking this isn’t a VMPRA event. It’s the annual AMPRA (Australian Miniature Pylon Racing Association) Championship and this was hosted by Barry Murphy at his spectacular, purpose-built pylon racing field, affectionately known as Bazza’s Paddock.
We had a good turnout of Victorian competitors and 1 interstater (Ranjit Phelan) with a large contingency camping out at the field which is becoming a popular thing to do at a lot of the country locations. It was a shame that not more interstate competitors could make it to the event.
The catering at this event was fantastic with a huge variety of food throughout the day including a pre test flight breakfast.
FA1 (AUST F3D), F400 & Q500 classes raced this weekend.
Saturday we raced 4 rounds of F400, 4 Rounds of Q500 and 2 rounds of FA1.
Sunday, 3 rounds of Q500 and the remaining 7 rounds of FA1.
Monday, 2 rounds of Q500 and the remaining 5 rounds of F400.

James Hurley raced his new KD Racer and Daniel Arapakis flew F400 for the first time with his Terry O’Connor built aircraft. His best time and 2nd race ever in this class was 72.36s.
Fastest time was flown by Andrew Davies with 68.74s.

There were 10 entries – the largest number I’ve seen at a 3-class event in the last 4 years. Really great to see more interest in this class and this has really raised the game with closer levels of competition.
The fastest time was Ian Haigh with 95.19s. This was achieved with his spare aircraft after the mysterious mid-air disintegration of his Viper.
By the time our next event comes around, competitors will be there or on their way to the F3D World Championships in the Netherlands. We’d like to wish the Australian and New Zealand teams all the best. Those representing Australia are:

Next Event
The next event is at Bendigo on July 13-14 and we are racing the FA1, F400 and Q500.
We are currently trying to confirm whether camping is allowed at the field, but there is a caravan park 5 minutes away in Marong where we usually have the AGM. We are also expecting to run the VMPRA AGM and general meeting (venue and time TBC).
New Event – Swan Hill
We have an event coming up on September 14-15 in Swan Hill. VMPRA haven’t been to Swan Hill in a long time and it’s always great to get a new location to go racing, so put this one in your diaries and let’s support this one.
In the last couple of years the Swan Hill club has experienced a real resurgence and they are very keen to have us. There is a group of Swan Hill members that will probably camp at the site and they can also provide up to 8 helpers. They have free on-site camping, a hot shower and toilets and there is likely to be big brekky and lunch at very reasonable prices.
The strip is 50 metres from the pits and the runway is gypsum (no dust) and the club can mow a take-off square and roll it if necessary.
So let’s try and make this a successful weekend. It would be great to see the guys from SA and the other Eastern states there.

What great weather and fantastic turnout we had for our annual Q500, Sports EF-1 event held at the Werribee Club last Sunday. This event is close to Melbourne and is always a good opportunity for newcomers to pylon, to have a go without travelling too far. At this very event, 12 months ago, a young lad named Daniel Arapakis came along with his trainer and flew pylon for the first time. Fast forward 12 months and he’s winning events flying his Vipers and on this day, test flew his first F400 model.
Six rounds of each class on a 10.5 lap FAI long course was flown so times can be compared to previous events.
Q500

With 11 competitors, I think this is the most we’ve had in the last 4 years that I’ve been back flying. There was only 4.2 seconds between the place getters’ and only 1 plane came to grief (think Matt and shipping container!). Jim Orenshaw racing his brand new airframe (his own design) and engine combination came first with Daniel Arapakis only 1 second behind.

In this class, pretty much anything goes. We had Tom Wetherill flying his super slick 32 size pylon racer, Mike Kellet racing a Cessna-looking trainer, Ian Haigh with his 16+ year old stick model, first timer Grant Collins flying a sports low wing and Andrew Arapakis, (also a first timer) flying a classic trainer.
All had a good day’s racing except Andrew who’s engine seized in the first race of the day. Was this one of Daniel’s old engines? Hope to see you flying at the next race Andrew.

This class is slowly gathering momentum with three entries at this event.
Mark French flew his Shoestring, Walter Muller and myself, Pogo’s. All three models used the same E-Flite outrunner motors with different combinations of ESC’s and LiPo’s.
Finally some good weather in Melbourne and six rounds were flown. Mark was experiencing ESC problems (possibly due to overheating) which caused a reduction of power towards the end of each race and Walter flew very consistently to improve his times throughout the day.

Q500 – No change in the top 3 positions but James Hurley has dropped away from the top by 4 points.

AMPRA – This is a national pylon event and it’s being held here in Victoria, so there will be a lot of flyers from interstate. This is the big event for the year. Check out this AMPRA page for details.

This Sunday (May 19) we are having a pylon race at Werribee. It’s a 1 day event flying Q500, Sports and EF-1.
The Q500 race is the penultimate round of the 2012-2013 VMPRA championship which ends at the following event to be held at Munro.
Sports pylon covers a large range of models from trainers to low wing sports planes, typically of a 46 sports engine size. It’s the best way to start pylon racing. Only 12 months ago, Daniel Arapakis was flying a trainer around the pylon course and now he’s up there with the fastest competitors in the Q500 class.
EF-1 models
EF-1 (electric formula 1) is a fairly new class for electric flight. There are a range of ARF models that can be purchased for this class and is an inexpensive way to go racing.
Wanted – Magazine Columnist
For many years, John Hughan wrote a pylon racing column in Airborne magazine (http://www.airbornemagazine.com.au/). Ever since John stopped producing this column, Airborne Magazine has been looking for a contributor to write pylon racing related articles on a regular basis. Having pylon racing represented in Airborne Magazine is a great chance to publicize our most exciting facet of aeromodelling. With AMPRA & the World Champs coming up soon, it’s a great time to start.

The third VMPRA event for 2013 was held at the Warrnambool Model Aircraft Club’s field in Koroit, Victoria. The field was in excellent condition and had been well groomed by the host club. Contestants began arriving on Friday afternoon and a large contingent set up camp at the field. Those that arrived early enjoyed excellent weather conditions for testing and practice.
Three classes were scheduled to be flown – Q500 Sport, VIC F400 and FA1, the Australian version of FAI. Per usual VMPRA practice, the racing was held over 10 ½ laps of the FAI course. This reduces the requirements for the number of course workers as the cut judges at the No1 Pylon also serve as the timers.
Q500 Sport and VIC F400 were scheduled for Saturday morning. Q500 attracted six entries and VIC F400 attracted 5 entries. Beau Murphy also flew an F5D. Three rounds of these classes were completed before the weather conditions deteriorated and racing was called off for the day.
At the end of three rounds, James Hurley was setting the pace in Q500 Sport. David Axon had entered the fray and was running in second place – under the guidance of Bryan Steele, with maintenance support from Jim Orenshaw. James’ arch rivals – John Schmidli and Daniel Arapakis suffered 200s. Matt Carter obliterated his model when it came in contact with the ground.
In VIC F400, Glenn Matthews lead the way with his new Nelson LS powered Supercat. He was followed by Andrew Davies and Gary Davidson. These proved to be the final placings for this class as there was not sufficient time to complete any additional rounds on Sunday.
Sunday dawned with misty rain and low cloud cover, which delayed the start. However, once the weather improved racing got underway with eight additional rounds of Q500 Sport and eight rounds of FA1 being completed.

The racing action in Q500 Sport became more intense on Sunday and times dropped significantly as conditions were much better than the day before. At the end of 11 rounds of racing Daniel Arapakis was comfortably in first place. His best time was 90.85 seconds, which is very impressive for this class. John Schmidli was in second place and Davis Axon was in third place – having improved his race times by over 20 seconds!
The initial pace in FA1 was fairly conservative, as re-tuning seemed to be in order for some contestants due to the significant change in the weather conditions. However, by Round Four the pace was picking up and the weather conditions had stabilised. Eight rounds were run before time and daylight were starting to run out. When the scores were tallied Tom Wetherill was in first place. Andrew Davies finished second – a good return to form with a fresh engine. Glenn Matthews finished in third place, posting some good times along the way. The fastest time in FA1 was a 58.5 (for 10 ½ laps) that was posted by Beau Murphy. The scores for the other competitors in FA1 were hampered by a few too many 200’s.

The Warrnambool event proved to be a great competition and VMPRA extends it thanks to the host club for allowing use of the field, providing workers to help man the course and for keeping everyone well fed during the weekend.

And Matt sat there working all afternoon until he had a plane to fly for the next day!
Another good turn-out for Q500 with David Axon joining in the fun. With the exception of a mishap with one of his models throwing a prop blade and being uncontrollable and going in, he had another model which flew well and he really improved his flying with the help of Brian Steel (shouting at him – David’s word) who was calling for him. David kept achieving new personal bests and ended up with 3rd place.
There was some good scrapps between myself and Daniel Arapakis with both of us getting new personal bests. 90.85 & 92.98 respectively. At this rate Daniel will be sub 90 seconds before long!

Next Event
The next event is a 1 day comp at Werribee flying Q500, EF-1 & Sports. The 1 day, introductory class races are the perfect event for coming along and trying pylon racing. There will be plenty of people on hand to assist you. You don’t need to have a special model. A 46 size trainer or low wing aircraft would be a fine model to start flying pylon.
EF-1 (Electric Formula 1) is a popular electric pylon racing class overseas. The planes are ARF models of full size formula 1 pylon racers. If you are into the electric models and want to race, this is your chance.

Back on the weekend of March 23-24, the VMPRA held an event down at Bazza’s Paddock. For those who are unfamiliar with this venue, the field is near Munro between Bairnesdale and Stratford in Gippsland (Victoria, Australia). This field is a private, purpose-built pylon racing course developed by Barry Murphy. It is always a brilliant place to hold an event.
After the recent hot weather, it was nice to have milder conditions. Each day started off still, but the wind picked up during the mornings. Unfortunately on the Sunday, it was decided that FA1 wouldn’t fly as the wind had become too strong to continue racing. As a result, only 5 rounds of FA1 were flown for the weekend.
There was a lot more carnage than at recent events, with planes lost by Rick Townsend, Andrew Davies, Matt Young and James Hurley. James and Matt found themselves out of planes by lunch time on Saturday. Bad luck for both of them but especially for Matt, who had traveled down by train from Bendigo with his planes, gear and camping equipment which was a really big effort! It was also good to have him flying Q500 as well as FA1.

During our lunch break on the Saturday, we had a visit from some VMAA & MAAA committee members. They presented the VMAA ‘Hall of Fame’ to Beau and Barry Murphy for their 2nd place at the F3D world championships back in 2011. It was great that the presentation could be made during this event and congratulations to Beau and Barry. Well done and we’ll be looking forward to hearing how you go at the world champs in Holland later this year.

Championship
The championship is now getting close to the end with only 2 FA1, F400 and 3 Q500 events left for this season.
For FA1 there was no change with the top 3 still being Tom Wetherill, Beau Murphy & Glenn Matthews respectively. Tom has increase his lead considerably as Beau had an uncharacteristically bad run on Saturday.
F400 saw a swapping of positions between flying partners Tom Wetherill and Jim Orenshaw. Tom has leaped to the top and Jim has moved down to 2nd place. Andrew Davies has now moved up to 3rd place.
There is a tight battle at the top with myself (John Schmidli) moving back to 1st place with James Hurley in 2nd Place although both on equal points. Positions have been decided based on total times. Daniel Arapakis maintains his 3rd position.
Victorian pylon racing started in earnest for 2013 on the first weekend of February with a 2 day event at Camperdown, situated in the western districts of Victoria. The Corangamite Model Aircraft Club is located at the Camperdown race course where they utilize the centre field of the course for r/c aeromodelling.
Events at this time of the year can be a rather hot affair. Luckily this year we experienced mild conditions with both days in the low 20s, partly cloudy and only one rain shower that stopped racing for a short time on the Sunday.
Gary Davidson & Toni Axon
This event consisted of our usual 3 classes of Q500, F400 and FA1 (AUST F3D) and we were able to run 9 rounds of each class over the 2 days. It worked out quite well with roughly half the rounds of each class on Saturday and the balance on Sunday.
The racing was a very clean affair with not one plane destroyed in a mid-air or ground impact. It is a testament to the skills of all when there were at times, some very close racing whilst avoiding planes tangling in the air. There were only a few under-cart repairs required due to the rather hard/dry ground. We were all pleased to have Gary Davidson back racing with us after his accident late last year.
F1A
The Murphy’s were again in fine form with Beau in particular who is preparing for the World Champs later this year, coming in 1st place. Barry came 2nd & Tom Wetherill in 3rd place.
F400
Terry O’Connor came 1st, Tom Wetherill 2nd and myself (John Schmidli) in 3rd place although a long way off the pace.
Q500
This was a bit of an upset (well at least for James Hurley and myself)! Daniel Arapakis in only his 3rd Q500 race (and before that a couple of races with a trainer), gained 1st place with some very quick times. James clawed his way back and finished less than 3 seconds away from Daniel in 2nd place. I (John Schmidli) came 3rd place.

Congratulations to Daniel. If you look at his past average times, you can see a large improvement each time. Nearly all his times were under 100 seconds and his best was 93.96 seconds. His acceptance speech was very amusing, referring to all who have helped him to date as uncles (ie Uncle Beau – his caller, Uncle Barry etc).
At the age of 12, Daniel’s path into pylon racing is a great example of how you can take up the sport beginning with simply having a go on some sports pylon races with a trainer (or similar) then getting into it a bit more seriously with the Q500 class. The Q500 class is a very affordable way to start racing and can be every bit as exciting as the faster classes. He has a great amount of support from his father but has also made friends with many of our experienced members who are very happy to give advice and guide him in the right direction.
Championship
At last count we only have three more races for F1A and F400 and five for Q500 in this 2012-2013 season.
FA1 – There has been no change with the top 3 although Beau Murphy in 2nd place is closing the gap on Tom Wetherill at the top. Glenn Matthews is still in 3rd.
F400 – Jim Orenshaw maintains the top position but now in 2nd is Tom Wetherill and 3rd is myself (John Schmidli).
Q500 sees the top 2 still being James Hurley and me (John Schmidli) respectively but Daniel Arapakis has moved up to 3rd place.
Next Event
Our next 3-class event is back at Bazza’s paddock in Munro on March 23-24.
Before that, there is a Q500/EF-1 and Sports event at Baccus Marsh on March 10.
Although not an official VMPRA event, we are all welcome to participate in a 50 Lap Endurance race at Lilydale (LDMFA) on Feb 17. Classes will be Q500 and Sports.
Anybody interested in taking up pylon racing is encouraged to come to the Bacchus Marsh or Lilydale events. Introduce yourself and give it a go!
Happy New year and all the best for the 2013 pylon racing year. By now, most of us will have returned back to our usual work activities and thoughts are returning to pylon racing (if ever out of our minds!).
This year is another exciting time for the VMPRA with the AMPRA Champs being held in Victoria (Munro) on June 8, 9 & 10 plus the World F3D Championships being held in the Netherlands at the air force base Deelen from 23rd – 28th July 2013. The Australian team includes VMPRA members, Beau & Barry Murphy plus Matt Young who has a chance of attending as a junior if funds can be raised (Matt’s fund raising Facebook page). There are also a number of members travelling to Europe for this event to help and spectate.
Camperdown
Again for this year, Camperdown is the location for our 1st competition for 2013. This is a great location for racing and it’s always a pleasure to visit this town.
As usual, there are some access restrictions at times, which is important to note so as to ensure a good relationship with the turf club and continued use of this great venue into the future.
NOTE – On Saturday the “Trackwatch” turf club rep. will allow access to the flying site in-between horse movements until 10.00am when we are then actually ok to fly. We can set up inside prior to 10:00am but there is not to be any flying before then.
From 10.00 onwards it is obviously open entry. If anybody turns up on Friday, they MUST NOT ENTER the field before 11.00am. Anytime after that is fine.
On Sunday there is no horse activity.
Camping on site is ok if we keep a low profile – especially early Saturday morning.
LDMFA 50 Lap Endurance Race.
The LDMFA club is hosting a 50-lap race on Feb 17, 2013. This event is being supported by the VMPRA with members and equipment provided for running the day. The event is open to LDMFA & VMPRA members as well as members of other VMAA affiliated clubs.
There will be Quickie 500 and Sports classes. Sports will cover pretty much anything, but usually consists of 46 size trainers and other sports aircraft. Two compulsory landings are required during the 50 laps of the race.
This is a great opportunity to try pylon racing for the first time, get more experience flying around a pylon course or just have a fun day of racing.

Munro was our last scheduled pylon racing event for 2012 before a 2 month break over the Christmas/Summer holiday. The weather was forecast was fine and warm, particularly on the Saturday, so there was no need for the cold weather gear of recent events.
There was a slightly smaller turnout than usual with some regular competitors busy with other activities. Quickie 500 had better than usual numbers for the weekend.
We started the morning with a update on how our mate Gary Davidson was after having a serious accident earlier in the week, when a spray paint can he was heating, exploded. Gary lost an eye, has lacerations to his hand and arm and is now in need of skin grafts for the burns to his chest. We all wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him out at a pylon field before too long. He was greatly missed during the weekend.

The event was run one class at a time with Q500 up first. With the quick preparation times between races for Q500, we were able to take the fuel out to the line and run 4 rounds of 2 heats fairly quickly. F400 was run next with a break in the middle for lunch and FA1 was run after that. There were always enough competitors free for each class to man the #1 pylon cage.
It was a really warm day and many of us found that we had to ration the water we’d brought out to the field as we were going through it quicker than usual. There was plenty of re-hydration of one sort or an other later that day.
Sunday was another fine sunny day but was a little cooler. We repeated the previous day’s schedule, this time running 5 rounds each.
Highlights and incidents
Daniel Arapakis at only 12 years old, doing a really great job flying Q500 in only his 2nd event for this class.
We were all very impressed with Daniel Arapakis’s flying in Q500. Beau Murphy was calling for him, and Daniel was racing low and tight with a good pace on his Viper. This was only his 2nd competition flying a proper Q500 aircraft. Before that he was flying a trainer. Well done Daniel. There are now some nervous Q500 pilots around.
I sheared both blades off the prop of my Q500 (Thunder Tiger) having collected Mark French’s wing tip after a failed takeoff, resulting in a damaged engine and flying my spare for the subsequent races on the Saturday.
There was Glenn Matthews and Jim Orenshaw’s mid-air collision in F400 and Jim lost his spare F400 due to a elevator failure.
Season Championship
Go-Fast Team - Murphy.
F3D – No changes in 1st and 3nd position, but Beau Murphy has now moved up to 2nd place.
F400 – Gary Davidson and Jim Orenshaw have swapped places with Jim returning to 1st place. Andrew Davies has moved up into 3rd place.
Q500 – The was no change for Q500, but James Hurley has increased his lead.
